News from the Nurse Virden CUSD #4 currently has two high school students exhibiting symptoms of viral meningitis. A letter has been sent home with each student. One case has been confirmed to be viral meningitis, and the other is pending culture results. Viral meningitis is the most common type of meningitis and is less severe than bacterial meningitis. An average of 600 cases of viral meningitis are reported annually in the State of Illinois. Virden CUSD #4 is being advised by medical professionals as to what procedures to follow. We have notified the Illinois Department of Public Health and they will contact us if necessary. Attention Parents of 4th grade students: As of August 2007, the State of Illinois changed the grade levels for mandatory school physicals. It used to be students entering Kindergarten, Fifth, and Ninth grades. It has been changed to Kindergarten, Sixth, and Ninth grades. Dental exams remain mandatory for Kindergarten, Second and Sixth grades. Please make note of this change. If you have any questions, you can reach me, Nurse Jill Murphy, at 965-5424. |

Important Message from the School Nurse Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has been in the news in recent weeks. Our district has NOT had any reported cases of this infection, and we are doing everything that we can to prevent it. The single most important thing we can do to keep from getting sick and spreading illness or infection is to clean our hands!
